Here’s a recipe for an old-fashioned butter cake:
Old Fashioned Butter Cake
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 1/4 cups unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs, at room temperature
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup whole milk, at room temperature
Instructions
- Preheat the oven:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or one 9×13-inch rectangular pan.
- Prepare the dry ingredients:
- Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Set aside.
- Cream the butter and sugar:
- In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, cream the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 4-5 minutes.
- Add the eggs:
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each egg is fully incorporated before adding the next. Mix in the vanilla extract.
- Combine the wet and dry ingredients:
- Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture in three parts, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
- Bake the cake:
- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pan(s). Smooth the top with a spatula.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes if using round pans, or 35-40 minutes if using a rectangular pan. The cake is done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool the cake:
- Allow the cake(s) to cool in the pan(s) for about 10 minutes. Then, remove from the pan(s) and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Serve:
- Once cooled, you can frost the cake with your favorite frosting or enjoy it plain. This cake pairs wonderfully with classic buttercream or a simple glaze.
Enjoy your delicious old-fashioned butter cake!
