Winter Meringues Recipe
Ingredients:
- 4 large egg whites (at room temperature)
- 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
- 1/4 tsp cream of tartar (optional, for stability)
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
- Food coloring (optional, for a festive touch)
- Crushed candy canes or edible glitter (optional, for decoration)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven:
- Preheat your oven to 200°F (90°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Prepare the meringue:
- In a clean, dry mixing bowl, beat the egg whites with a pinch of salt on medium speed until they become foamy.
- Add the cream of tartar (if using) and continue beating.
- Add sugar gradually:
- Increase the speed to high and start adding the sugar one tablespoon at a time. Ensure the sugar dissolves completely between additions (this might take about 5-7 minutes).
- Check for stiff peaks:
- Beat the mixture until it forms stiff, glossy peaks. Rub a small amount between your fingers to ensure the sugar has dissolved completely. If it feels gritty, keep beating.
- Add flavor and color:
- Gently fold in the vanilla extract. If you want colored meringues, divide the mixture into portions and add a drop of food coloring to each. Swirl lightly for a marbled effect.
- Shape the meringues:
- Use a piping bag with a star tip to pipe small mounds or swirls onto the prepared baking sheets. Alternatively, use two spoons to create rustic dollops.
- Decorate:
- Sprinkle with crushed candy canes, edible glitter, or leave plain for a classic look.
- Bake low and slow:
- Bake the meringues in the preheated oven for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until they are firm to the touch and can be easily lifted off the parchment paper. They should not brown.
- Cool completely:
- Turn off the oven and let the meringues cool inside with the door slightly ajar to prevent cracking.
- Serve and store:
- Serve immediately or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks, as long as they stay dry.
Enjoy your light, crisp, and festive Winter Meringues! Perfect for holiday desserts or as a delightful treat with hot chocolate.
