Creamy Mac and Cheese
Ingredients:
- 8 oz elbow macaroni (about 2 cups)
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp mustard powder (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (for topping, optional)
- 2 tbsp melted butter (for topping, optional)
Instructions:
- Cook the Macaroni:
- Cook the elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Prepare the Cheese Sauce:
- In a large saucepan, melt 2 tbsp butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute until it forms a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the milk and heavy cream. Continue to whisk until the mixture is smooth and begins to thicken, about 5 minutes.
- Reduce the heat to low and add the shredded cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, and Parmesan cheese. Stir until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.
- Season with garlic powder, onion powder, mustard powder (if using), salt, and pepper.
- Combine Pasta and Sauce:
- Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir to coat the pasta evenly.
- Optional: Add Topping and Bake:
- If you like a baked mac and cheese with a crispy topping, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish. In a small bowl, mix breadcrumbs with melted butter and sprinkle evenly over the mac and cheese.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.
- Serve:
- Serve hot and enjoy!
This creamy mac and cheese is perfect as a side dish or a comforting main course.
