Fried Chicken Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 whole chicken, cut into pieces
- 2 cups buttermilk
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for extra spice)
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
- Marinate the Chicken: Place the chicken pieces in a large bowl and pour the buttermilk over them. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for best results.
- Prepare the Coating: In a large shallow dish, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using).
- Coat the Chicken: Remove the chicken from the buttermilk, allowing the excess to drip off. Dredge each piece in the seasoned flour mixture, pressing lightly to adhere. Place the coated chicken on a wire rack and let sit for 10-15 minutes.
- Heat the Oil: In a large, deep skillet or Dutch oven, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the Chicken: Carefully place a few pieces of chicken in the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry until golden brown and cooked through, about 12-15 minutes for dark meat and 8-10 minutes for white meat. Use a thermometer to ensure the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C).
- Drain and Serve: Remove the chicken from the oil and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Repeat with remaining chicken. Serve hot.
