Here’s a refreshing Homemade Ginger Beer recipe. It’s slightly spicy, fizzy, and perfect for a warm day!
Ingredients:
- 1 cup fresh ginger, grated or finely chopped
- 1 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 cup fresh lemon or lime juice
- 8 cups water (divided)
- 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (for carbonation)
- Optional: Mint leaves for garnish
- Ice, for serving
Instructions:
- Make the ginger syrup:
- In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of water with the grated ginger and sugar.
- Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar.
- Reduce heat and simmer for 5-10 minutes to infuse the flavors.
- Remove from heat and let it cool completely. Strain the syrup into a clean bowl or pitcher.
- Mix the ginger beer:
- In a large pitcher or bottle, combine the ginger syrup with lemon or lime juice.
- Add 7 cups of water and stir to mix well.
- Carbonate with yeast (optional for fizz):
- If you want natural carbonation, stir in 1/4 tsp of active dry yeast.
- Transfer the mixture into a plastic or glass bottle with a tight seal. Leave a little room at the top to avoid overflow.
- Let the bottle sit at room temperature for 24-48 hours until the mixture becomes fizzy. Keep an eye on the pressure if using glass to avoid breakage.
- Chill and serve:
- Once fizzy, transfer the bottle to the refrigerator to slow down fermentation.
- Serve cold over ice, garnished with mint leaves if desired.
Storage:
Enjoy within 1 week for the best flavor and fizz! Open the bottle slowly to release pressure.
This homemade ginger beer is great on its own or used as a mixer for cocktails like a Moscow Mule. Enjoy!
