Hush Puppies Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp sugar
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for a bit of heat)
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion (or green onion for extra flavor)
- 1 tbsp melted butter
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions:
- Prepare the Batter:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, sugar, and cayenne pepper. Mix well.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, chopped onion, and melted butter.
- Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the hush puppies light and fluffy.
- Heat the Oil:
- In a deep skillet or heavy-bottomed pot, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the Hush Puppies:
- Using a spoon or small cookie scoop, carefully drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil. Fry in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the hush puppies are golden brown and cooked through.
- Use a slotted spoon to transfer the hush puppies to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Serve:
- Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce or alongside fried fish, barbecue, or any Southern-style meal!
Enjoy these crispy, golden hush puppies as a delicious snack or side!
