Layered Beef and Mashed Potato Casserole Recipe
This comforting and hearty casserole layers seasoned ground beef with creamy mashed potatoes and melted cheese for the perfect meal.
Ingredients
For the Beef Layer:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 cup (240ml) tomato sauce
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp paprika
- ½ tsp dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Mashed Potatoes:
- 4 large potatoes, peeled and diced
- 3 tbsp butter
- ⅓ cup (80ml) milk (adjust for desired consistency)
- ½ cup (50g) shredded cheddar cheese
- Salt to taste
For Topping:
- 1 cup (100g) shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Mashed Potatoes:
- Boil the potatoes in salted water until fork-tender (about 15-20 minutes).
- Drain and mash the potatoes with butter, milk, and shredded cheese until smooth. Season with salt to taste. Set aside.
- Cook the Beef Mixture:
- In a skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat.
- Add onion and garlic to the skillet and sauté until softened (about 2-3 minutes).
- Stir in tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
- Assemble the Casserole:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a greased 9×9-inch baking dish, spread the beef mixture evenly as the base layer.
- Spoon the mashed potatoes on top, spreading them evenly to cover the beef layer.
- Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the mashed potatoes.
- Bake:
- Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- For a golden top, broil for 1-2 minutes (watch carefully to avoid burning).
- Serve:
- Let the casserole cool for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.
