Here’s a hearty Salisbury Steak Meatballs with Mushroom Gravy recipe that’s perfect for a comforting meal!
Ingredients:
For the Meatballs:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp mustard (optional)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
For the Mushroom Gravy:
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 8 oz mushrooms, sliced (button or cremini)
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp fresh thyme (optional)
Instructions:
For the Meatballs:
- Mix the meatball ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, onion, egg, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, pepper, and parsley. Mix until well combined, but do not overwork the meat.
- Form meatballs: Shape the mixture into 1 1/2 inch meatballs (about 18-20 meatballs). Set them aside on a plate.
- Cook the meatballs: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add a drizzle of oil. Brown the meatballs on all sides, working in batches if necessary. They don’t need to be cooked through at this stage, as they’ll finish cooking in the gravy. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set them aside.
For the Mushroom Gravy:
- Sauté the onions and mushrooms: In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions and cook for 2-3 minutes until soft. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they release their liquid and start to brown, about 5-6 minutes.
- Make the gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and onions, stirring to coat everything. Cook the flour for about 1 minute, then slowly pour in the beef broth, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, salt, pepper, and thyme (if using). Bring to a simmer and cook for 3-5 minutes, until the gravy thickens.
- Simmer the meatballs: Return the browned meatballs to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10-15 minutes, until the meatballs are cooked through and the gravy is rich and flavorful.
- Serve: Serve the Salisbury steak meatballs over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice, and spoon plenty of mushroom gravy on top. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
Tips:
- For extra richness, you can add a splash of heavy cream to the gravy at the end.
- If you like a thicker gravy, add another tablespoon of flour when making the roux.
Enjoy your comforting Salisbury steak meatballs with this delicious mushroom gravy!
