Southern Fried Shrimp Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 lb (450 g) large shrimp (peeled, deveined, tails on or off, as preferred)
- 1 cup (240 ml) buttermilk
- 1 tsp hot sauce (optional, for flavor)
- 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup (60 g) cornmeal
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for spice)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
- Lemon wedges (for serving)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Shrimp
Rinse the shrimp under cold water and pat them dry with a paper towel. Place them in a bowl with the buttermilk and hot sauce (if using). Let the shrimp marinate in the fridge for at least 15-20 minutes for added flavor. - Preheat the Oil
Heat about 2-3 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer for precise frying temperature. - Prepare the Breading
In a shallow dish, combine the flour, cornmeal, garlic powder, paprika, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and black pepper. Mix well. - Coat the Shrimp
Remove the shrimp from the buttermilk, letting the excess drip off. Dredge each shrimp in the flour mixture, pressing lightly to ensure an even coating. - Fry the Shrimp
Working in batches, carefully place the shrimp into the hot oil. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Avoid overcrowding the pan to maintain the oil temperature. - Drain and Serve
Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried shrimp and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. - Serve Hot
Serve the Southern Fried Shrimp immediately with lemon wedges and your favorite dipping sauce, such as cocktail sauce, tartar sauce, or spicy remoulade.
Tips:
- For extra crunch, double-dip the shrimp by dipping them back into the buttermilk and flour mixture before frying.
- Ensure the oil stays at the correct temperature to prevent greasy shrimp.
Enjoy your Southern Fried Shrimp with a side of coleslaw or fries for a true Southern feast!
