Unicorn Purple Velvet Cake Recipe
Ingredients:
For the Cake:
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons purple food coloring (gel or liquid)
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
For the Frosting:
- 1 ½ cups unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2-4 tablespoons heavy cream or milk (adjust for desired consistency)
- Purple food coloring (gel or liquid)
- Sprinkles (unicorn-themed or pastel colors)
- Edible glitter (optional)
For Decoration:
- Unicorn horn and ear cake toppers
- Assorted sprinkles in pastel colors
- Edible pearls and stars
Instructions:
1. Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.
2. Mix Dry Ingredients:
- In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
3. Cream Butter, Sugar, and Wet Ingredients:
- In a separate bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vegetable oil, vanilla extract, vinegar, and lemon juice. Mix until smooth.
4. Add Buttermilk and Flour Mixture:
- Gradually alternate adding the dry flour mixture and the buttermilk to the wet ingredients, starting and ending with the flour. Mix until just combined.
5. Color the Batter:
- Add the purple food coloring to the batter and mix until the color is evenly distributed.
6. Bake the Cakes:
- Divide the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.
7. Prepare the Frosting:
- In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the vanilla extract and a few tablespoons of heavy cream to reach your desired frosting consistency. If you want to color the frosting purple, add a few drops of purple food coloring and mix until well combined.
8. Assemble the Cake:
- Once the cakes are completely cooled, level the tops if necessary. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of frosting over the top. Add the second cake layer, and repeat with the frosting. Finally, add the third layer and frost the entire cake with a thin layer of frosting for the crumb coat. Chill the cake for 30 minutes.
9. Final Frosting and Decoration:
- Apply a final, thicker layer of frosting to the cake, smoothing the sides and top. Decorate with unicorn-themed sprinkles, edible pearls, stars, and a dusting of edible glitter. Top with the unicorn horn and ear cake toppers.
10. Serve and Enjoy:
- Your Unicorn Purple Velvet Cake is ready to dazzle! Slice and serve to enjoy the magical flavors.
