Shepherd’s Pie Recipe
Ingredients
For the filling:
- 1 lb (450g) ground lamb or beef (or a mix of both)
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 carrots, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup (150g) frozen peas
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup (240ml) beef broth
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
For the mashed potatoes:
- 2 lbs (900g) potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup (120ml) milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Mashed Potatoes:
- Boil the potatoes in a large pot of salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
- Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
- Add the butter and milk, and mash until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
- Make the Filling:
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the onion and carrots, cooking until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- Add the ground lamb or beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned.
- Stir in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
- Pour in the beef broth and bring to a simmer. Cook for about 5 minutes until slightly thickened.
- Add the frozen peas and mix well. Remove from heat.

- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a baking dish, spread the meat filling evenly.
